everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted. - albert einstein

If you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?
If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that.
If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge.
If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example?
Why, revenge. The villany you teach me, I will execute,
and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

W. Shakespeare (Shylock in Merchant of Venice, Act 3/Scene 1)

I just returned from an inspiring week working with entrepreneurs & thought leaders in the Middle East - and returned to find Israel and the Palestinians again locked in a powerful cycle of destructive & justified vengeance a la Shylock’s . It’s easy to get cynical & very, very angry but I still pray for peace. Peace isn’t made between friends, it’s made between enemies…we’ve got to find a way to get out of the trenches and back to the table (credit to Yosi for articulating this).

Claire Felicie’s photographs Marines’ faces before, during, and after Afghanistan

How do life-changing experiences concretely impact the way we look? Does tragedy truly show up in our eyes and brow? These are questions that fascinate Claire Felicie, who photographed the faces of 20 Dutch Marines before, during, and after their tour of duty in Afghanistan. From first photo to last photo, only 12 months passed, but a great deal happened in these young men’s lives.

Worth a thousand words. So powerful.

In honor of the 40th Anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s historic concert at the Kennedy Center; & inspired by NPR’s story yesterday about the Center’s re-imagining of the concert and involvement of young artists to remix the title track.

Been a big 24 hours in music. Among other notable milestones, celebrating the superhumanly long career of Pete Seeger (Happy 93rd Bday!) - and the tragic premature loss of MCA (No sleep till Brooklyn!).
