In honor of the 40th Anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s historic concert at the Kennedy Center; & inspired by NPR’s story yesterday about the Center’s re-imagining of the concert and involvement of young artists to remix the title track.
Been a big 24 hours in music. Among other notable milestones, celebrating the superhumanly long career of Pete Seeger (Happy 93rd Bday!) - and the tragic premature loss of MCA (No sleep till Brooklyn!).
Nina Simone passed away in Carry-le-Rouet, France on 4/21/2003. It is 4/21 in Carry-le-Rouet now. RIP.

In honor of her first new album in years - and of the absolutely beautiful new Spotify integration on Tumblr - this is one of my all-time (if depressing) faves from the blues master Bonnie. So many of her tracks give me chills when “she sets up the rhythm with her band and then slides her voice in like a letter going into an envelope addressed to you” (thanks, Ken Tucker).
