[Climate deniers are] shocked, shocked to learn that climate hawks and activists have been using twitter and social media as “glue for the cause” and yes — oh, the horror — to communicate with each other! That’s of course why it is called social media. Watts [a prominent denier] admits: “A few years ago, I never much thought social media was worth much, but seeing how Michael Mann and Bill McKibben have been using it to their advantage, my view on the importance of it has changed.” (Memo to Deniers: Try replacing “social media” with “science” in the above sentence.)

Are climate deniers lagging behind in social media because “science is inherently a social enterprise” or because Al Gore invented the Internet?

We’ll have a much better shot at developing solutions to our climate and energy problems that are good for our economy if leaders from across the political spectrum get re-engaged in the debate. It is time for conservatives to compete with liberals to devise the best, most cost-effective climate solutions. Solving this challenge will require all of us.
Fred Krupp, of the Environmental Defense Fund, desperately trying to break America’s climate change impasse with reasonable words in the WSJ. We’ve tried reason before, and while the data-driven skeptics are finally reassessing, are the politically-driven ones likely to do so in a meaningful way? I hope so, but I’m, er, skeptical.

If the iconic Olympic rings represent healthy, peaceful competition and union, perhaps the Olympics are a good occasion to reflect upon the other ways each region stacks up. Gustavo Sousa’s beautiful visualizations show who’s “winning” when it comes to everything from % of millionaires to # of McDonald’s.

We’ve read that the word ‘sustainable’ isn’t sustainable, and neither, it seems, is the American appetite for the hybrid automobile. Two-thirds of hybrid car owners have no interest in buying another hybrid. Why? Perhaps because gas savings are negated by replacing an expensive battery. Or it could be ‘range anxiety’ — the fear that your electric car will putter out miles from an outlet, in a red state where Stand Your Ground laws justify the murder of people who believe in science. Or maybe it’s the shimmering plume of noxious smug released every time your Nissan Leaf switches from ‘self-righteous slumber’ mode to ‘drive, but only because a panda’s life is in danger.’
In honor of Earth Week, an excerpt from Bureau of Trade’s post “Who Killed the Eclectic Car?”. Yeah, they’re definitely trying to sell you some sweet vintage wheels (justified because “it’s more efficient to buy a used car than it is to encourage the manufacture of a new one”) but they also make some damn good points.
