The Obama Administration announced today that Bayard Rustin, the “lost prophet” of the Civil Rights Movement, will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the US’s highest civilian award. Rustin was, among many things, a key advisor to MLK, Jr. and primary organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (which marks its 50th anniversary in a few weeks). He had been largely written out of the Movement’s history because of his homosexuality.
